GeDet Detectors

Germanium detectors are widely used for the detection of radiation, especially low levels of photon radiation. In the context here, they are to be used as active elements in large experiments. This results in very special requirements and considerations.
Several detectors were tested, characterized and used for various measurements.
In the end, 18-fold segmented n-type detectors were chosen as a baseline solution for possible usage in an experiment like GERDA. Segmented n-type detectors are used in only few experimedts and there is only one source of such detectors, Canberra France. However, the detectors are technically advanced and as they are custom made, they can be optimized for any given experiment.
Details on detector design and technology as well as a list of detectors available at the MPI can be found here [pdf], [ps].
